You see I was told not to wear anything to flashy, look more classic, pretty. So I set out with a goal to find a special knee length cocktail dress. I planned on trying on size 16s, and I did a few, but a size 14 fit better (HOOORAH!!!). I plan on going shopping with a few friends to get a few critiques, but I was bored Friday and went anyways. I love to shop at my local Goodwill. I wasn't expecting to find anything, just enjoy looking. Boy was I wrong. I found like 6 dresses ranging in size from a 10 to 16. I was really hoping that the 10s would work (I was lying to myself big time). I told myself that some brands are actually raising the sizes, the ten might fit. Needless to say, they didn't. They being a red dress and a navy blue dress, brand new, strapless, and right above the knee. Just perfect-- if I could have gotten them above my upper thighs!
Moving on to 2 little black dresses, one all black, strapless, size 10, new, at knee. The other black with white trim along the top of the bodice, strapless, at the knee, size 12. Maybe, maybe, nope-- the zipper was broken. I know the chance of finding something new and in perfect condition in a thrift store, but after the first 3 being new I was at least hoping for in good condition. Anyways, those two do not work either. Finally my last two a size 12 and a size 14. The size 12 was black with gold medallion looking circles all over, new, and at the knee. I tried it on; it made it all the way on. But damn it was too tight to sit in. I looked and looked for a size 14, none on the racks.
The last dress was "the dress". I should have just been honest from the beginning a tried on 14's. So I put this two color blocked dress on, and a PERFECT fit! It was new, or never worn (other than others trying it on). I feel in love with it. It has this look of professionalism, of high class, and it says: my husband is going to be the best and there is nothing you can do about it. But at the time, I wasn't so sure of it.
So I went in search again, this time to see the black and gold dress hanging on the wall as an example- here's to hoping. I have someone get it down for me and what do you know... it's a size 14! But there's a catch. When I put on this dress there was too much room in the abdomen area, from those damn pleats!! I looked pregnant, which I am NOT. Why do there have to be pleats in a cocktail dress anyways? Those are for pants. They do not flatter anyone, unless you have nothing to flatter anyways, because you are a size 4 or below.
Anyway, I felt beautiful in my dress. Here is what it looked like in the dressing room:
